What the principle of world redemption has yet to accomplish for terrestrial mankind
1633. Light is now the object of their longing or hunger. But what the "serpent" or world redemption has yet to accomplish for human beings is thus to teach these beings the direct speech of life itself. But this can be done only by revealing the living beings' highest identity and structure of life as science. This science, which is manifested here in "Livets Bog" among other places, has the task of showing human beings Nature's own utterances, the speech of life itself. For in doing so, human beings will be able to see for themselves that darkness is not anything absolutely "evil" in the world; it is not anything "devilish" that has to be avenged or hated; on the contrary it constitutes something that has its natural mission in the eternal maintenance of life itself. If one does not reach an understanding of the mission of darkness, one will never be able to experience the basic answer of life itself, namely, that "everything is very good".If one does not understand that exposure to nothing but sunshine creates deserts, and that fertility and thereby life are created only when this exposure to sunshine is combined with rain and grey weather, one cannot of course understand either that mental sunshine or light alone also creates mental deserts, death and downfall, and that here too contrasts are needed.
