The state of the sexual poles determines the ultimate appearance of both "cosmic death" and "cosmic consciousness", and all the stages of life between these
1635. The small part of the real, main sexual principle that constitutes the terrestrial human being's principle of fertilisation is merely a latent remnant of the "highest fire", which must of necessity be preserved in the living being if it is not to be completely unconscious or lifeless, and thus represent real or absolute death. If the sexual fire could be put out completely, how could it be relit? Cosmic unconsciousness can thus sink down only to the stage that is represented by the male and female state. With the culmination of the male state and the female state or the state of imbalance between the two sexual poles in the living being, cosmic death or unconsciousness has reached its maximum, while consciousness or the experience of life has its absolute maximum manifestation or culmination in the balance or equality of the same two poles in the same being. Between these two extremes, all kinds of life experience occur, both animal and human, primitive and intellectual, imperfect and perfect. The consciousness or life experience of the living being is thus a movement to and fro between these two extremes and is thereby a journey from primitivity to intellectuality, and from intellectuality onwards to primitivity, and from primitivity onwards to intellectuality, and so on continuously for all eternity. The experience of life is thereby a perpetual journey between imperfection and perfection, a journey forwards and backwards from darkness to light, and from light to darkness, and so on. The life of the living being constitutes therefore stages of light and darkness, stages of knowledge and ignorance, stages of consciousness and unconsciousness.
