1637. But it is not merely in the living being's vital functions that the experience of life is a journey between the culmination of light and darkness. If we look at matter, we will see that any thing at any point in time also represents a journey between these two great contrasts. A drop of water alternates between forming part of a sewage puddle and part of crystal-clear drinking water, just as what were once sewage puddles today form beautiful white clouds, the blue sky and the morning and evening glow of sunrise and sunset. And are not all other substances expressive of stages in a cycle too? Are not some substances solid, others liquid, and yet others gaseous or ray-formed? Do not these stages follow one another in precise succession? Is their form not based on temperature? Can solid substances not become liquid, and can liquids not become gaseous, and can gaseous substances not become ray-formed? And can ray-formed matter not become gaseous once again, and gaseous become liquid, and liquid become solid through changes in temperature? Would not an extremely high temperature change things in the direction of the ray-formed state? And would not a correspondingly extremely low temperature change things in the direction of the solid state? How could the Earth have come into existence without the influence of heat and coldness? Does not the changeability of the substances, or their movement through the stages between fire and coldness, form the basis for the beings' physical and spiritual changeability, for their mental movement between light and darkness or, in brief, for all experience of life?
