1652. We have thus seen here that the "highest fire" appears in three sexes. But these three sexes form in fact no more than two perfect sexes. The "male sex" and the "female sex" each constitute merely a "half sex". This is why these two sexes must be united in marriage or the mating state. Through the act of copulation they can attain a certain rudimentary glimpse of the bliss of real life or a higher form of existence. And only for the duration of this glimpse do they together constitute a "whole sex". And thus they experience a momentary or lightning experience of the perfect experience of life. This perfect experience of life is so dominant that it becomes the paramount driving force in the being's daily life. It becomes just as absolutely essential to its mental balance and satisfaction as food and drink are absolutely essential to its physical body or organism. But since its occurrence is so infrequent that it can be experienced only as a momentary or lightning experience, the being, during all the time that lies outside the culmination of the sexual act, must still do without paradise or the bliss of real life. This state of affairs is made even more realistic by virtue of the extraordinarily hard conditions that have to be met in order to render possible the attainment of these lightning-flash experiences of the impulse or bliss of real life. As a "half-sex being" the individual can feel real life only through sexual contact with a "half-sex being" of the opposite kind, the so-called "opposite sex".
