But to ensure that this "sphere of death" does not bring the individual's consciousness to a complete standstill – the individual thereby reaching an "impasse" or encountering a real, absolute "death" from which it would be impossible for it to get going again – its reduced spiritual or intellectual functions are based on its meeting with another "half-sex being" of the opposite kind. By becoming "one flesh" with this being, which means, by being sexually united in an act of love, the two beings experience a reflection or a lightning glimpse of the wellbeing that is originally the "whole-sex being's" permanent cosmic feeling of life. This act is thus a cosmic bridge over which the being crosses the "sphere of death". But in the consciousness of the culminating "half-sex being" this act and the momentary experience of the "highest fire" or feeling of wellbeing that is connected with it are sensed only as a feeling of physical pleasure. They are very far from being able to imagine that the act, when carried out in a way that is perfect for both parties, is a cosmic experience, a temporary elevation beyond the material plane, indeed, a superphysical experience. As yet they know nothing of the fact that this act – where two beings, through the culmination of their mutual attraction, are united for seconds or minutes as "one flesh" – is an experience of the keynote of the universe, of all-outshining love, of harmony and joy, which in turn is a direct experience of God's nearness in the form of the pervasion of their nervous systems by the holy spirit in the form of bliss.
