1673. But these human measures have thus been completely incapable of hindering the huge eruption of dark forces that characterises the fate of present-day mankind. Since they have been unable to do this, it is thus evidently God's will that this darkness really had to occur. It is thus a release of forces like Nature's other releases of forces. The entire sphere of mental darkness is thus a force of Nature, a logical link in the world structure itself. Mankind can at most take feeble, faltering precautionary measures of a kind. And people's moral orders and injunctions regarding sexuality are thus also only a weak dike erected against a huge storm surge that breaks through the dike in numerous places and smashes it to pieces. But why should this "highest fire" not have its dark clouds of smoke, its cinders and ash like all other kinds of fires and bonfires? To confine fire without giving it any air or an outlet for its smoke and ash would be the same as putting the fire out. And it has never of course been Providence's intention that people should be able to put out the "highest fire". What would life be without it? Life cannot be merely a process of thought. And of what use would this process of thought be if it could not ultimately create a feeling of pleasure, enjoyment or bliss both for the being itself and for its surroundings? This enjoyment would be completely impossible if the "highest fire" did not exist. All forms of enjoyment are, as will be remembered, branches, leaves and flowers on the main stem of the "highest fire". The situation is therefore so wisely arranged that the "highest fire's" power is far superior to that of even the inquisition and other ways in which the fully mobilised power behind a prescribed morality have been unable to put the fire out. It has been able to go on spreading suffocating fumes, dust and cinders from its clouds of smoke to all layers of society, peoples, cultures and perceptions of morality. Indeed, these religious perceptions of morality – with their prescribed celibacy, asceticism and other unnatural prohibitions – have actually contributed to worsening the evil instead of hindering it.
