1690. But we already know this law about the smallest and greatest manifestation of life, this principle that determines the creation of all contrasts, as constituting the "highest fire". We know that the seat of this fire is in the sexual pole structure of the living being. And through a specific, reciprocal, fluctuating relationship between these two poles (the masculine pole and the feminine pole in the being), the being's smallest and greatest unfolding of life experience is produced, as are the resulting planes of existence in the spiral cycle. With this overview of the structure of the experience of life we can easily see and understand the "deep sleep" that God caused to fall upon Adam. This "sleep" can thus, as we have already shown, be nothing other than the passage of Adam or the living being through its own inner world, a state in which it outwardly – towards the planes of existence of the outer world – displays nothing but an absolutely unconscious or sleeping state. Can anything in the universe or existence be more expressive of a "deep sleep" than precisely this being's state where, despite the fact that it exists, it does not, however, manifest any waking day-consciousness in the outer worlds, and has therefore no conscious correspondence or interaction whatsoever with any other being in existence? This, life's deepest sleep, is thus not the physical night's sleep that we know from the physical world. It is a specific epoch of experience. It is the passage of the living being through the area of this inner world in the spiral cycle.
