It is not so surprising that the solution to the riddle of life cannot be found in "unconscious" or "lifeless" substances
1694. And with the superstition that one can find the solution to this riddle of life in "dead substances", that is in "mineral matter", one rushes past the "living microbeings" and uses one's ability as a researcher to delve deeply into matter where no "life" is to be found at all. Here the fact that one finds only an infinity of "power units" or centres of energy provides of course no answer other than a continuous succession of new and even smaller "dead" particles of matter or centres of energy that are even more inaccessible to the researchers' abilities. Here one sees nothing of "life".Where this does not manifest itself as "life", one cannot of course see "life".Here only a "dead" or "lifeless" world, a world consisting of mere "movements" will of course reveal itself to the observer. And, quite inevitably, this observer here then becomes a worshipper of "death" instead of "life".Thus the microworld for him becomes mainly a "dead world", even though he still sees "movement", "power" and the "manifestation of energy" here. And in the same way he also sees only a "lifeless" macrocosmos above his head, around him and below him.If he does not understand the macrocosmos, he cannot see either that it is merely a higher plane of existence in relation to the mesocosmos, just as the mesocosmos is a higher plane of existence in relation to the microcosmos.Such a being will likewise find it incomprehensible that a macrocosmos has to consist of organisms for I's, just as the mesocosmos consists of organisms for I's or "living beings", and that he (the researcher) himself is a "macrobeing" for the microbeings that live in his organism, just as he himself is confronted with a macrobeing whose organism consists of his own world, fellow beings, earth and sky.Under these circumstances it is not so surprising that the solution to the riddle of life cannot be found by seeking merely in "lifeless" or "unconscious" matter. The solution to the riddle of life is and can be only "life" or "consciousness".And one must therefore look for this solution in the phenomena where "life" or "consciousness" is present or manifests itself to a particular degree. And it is thus not in "dead" substances but in "living" ones that we have to look for this manifestation.
