1732. Since it is thus a matter of developing the source of mental warmth in the individual, what can we do better for the time being than focus on the human being who is so obviously so much further evolved than the terrestrial mankind is, so much so that he was chosen by Providence to be the revelation of the culmination of mental warmth for this mankind? What we have already pointed out establishes as irrefutable fact that love is the only thing that can remedy mankind's misery or the strife and suffering that today cause it to moan and groan. It is thus a fact that we have at least a description of a being whose behaviour certainly outraged his contemporaries to such a degree that this behaviour led to its source being hung on the cross, but this behaviour gradually proved to be so much in harmony with evolution and reality that it became an immortal part of human history and has for almost two thousand years been borne by the grateful homage and praise of millions of people. No king or emperor has, through his behaviour alone, ever come close to being able to win such a host of faithful followers over such a long period of time and so long after his physical death. That this being – who was born under the most primitive and impoverished conditions and in circumstances that have stamped other newly born babies down through the centuries as "illegitimate children", just as he had to work by the sweat of his face like other craftsmen – has with his behaviour alone been able to create such a position for himself establishes as fact that his particular behaviour was something of tremendous significance for terrestrial mankind, indeed, was a light that could not be hidden, a light that could not be put out. And the mere fact that this behaviour was a culmination of sympathy, forgiveness and understanding of his neighbour, and was thus absolute love, proved that "neighbourly love" is the most elevated factor in the living being's psyche and therefore to absolutely the same extent must be the most elevated and most essential object for human research. As a confirmation of this, one might add that all the other great sages in the world are similarly the beings that have won the most followers. Never has a modern dictator had as extensive a thousands-of-years-old kingdom of generations of faithful followers as the greatest representatives of humanity and neighbourly love or the world redeemers.
