1735. We have now seen that this purpose or destiny can be none other than the creation and attainment of peace for the individual as well as for mankind as a whole. Since peace can be based absolutely only on neighbourly love – and is, indeed, neighbourly love itself – we must now direct our gaze towards the innermost source of the most profound aspects of our consciousness. For every normally gifted, intellectual human being it goes without saying that it is a matter of understanding and developing love, since it is now an irrefutable fact that there is nothing mankind needs more and is hungering for more than fellow-feeling or love. And where is this love to come from if every individual does not put its mind to it and do what has to be done to develop it in his or her own nature. For the moment this love is far more important than schooling, university education and other forms of human development. Indeed, we have seen that this expansion of the consciousness or this acquisition of knowledge has led mankind straight to war, mutilation, death and destruction where neighbourly love was lacking in the psyche of its source. Only a fool or ignorant materialist can now oppose the science of love itself. Everyone must now therefore direct his or her gaze towards universal love or, more precisely, neighbourly love.
