1736. He or she who really wants to get to the bottom of the science of love, and thereby the sexual principle or the highest fire, must now lift him- or herself up above the current thousands-of-years-old traditions and notions about this principle or the highest fire. And it must be admitted that this is no easy matter. No factor of consciousness whatsoever, no aspect of the human psyche whatsoever is so entangled, hidden or camouflaged in the quagmire of superstition and misunderstanding as the branch of the highest fire that manifests itself in the terrestrial human being's sexuality or sympathetic faculties. The great process of evolution or transformation of this organic function that the millennia have resulted in has been misunderstood and persecuted as much as it possibly can be, with the result that mankind today is quite ignorant of its most sublime and all-important organic function. And what is worse is that a very great percentage of mankind's individuals have gone to ruin in sexual abnormalities of many different kinds, quite apart from the innumerable unhappy relationships, the humiliation, shame, disgrace and suicide that are also consequences of the unboundedly absurd or superstitious idea that the sexual, organic aspect of the human being is something derogatory, something degrading, something that one should actually be ashamed to talk about, despite the fact that the effects of this organic principle are secretly present behind the intellectual or conscious mental life of all normal, sexually mature beings. Due to the fact that religions and the clergy have also regarded it as sinful to concern oneself with the above-mentioned question, it has become a mystery down through the millennia that, as already mentioned, was in everyone's thoughts and consciousness without it being allowed to develop into a subject of open conversation and interest. But since it was a drive that could not possibly be stopped, however much one tried to live in celibacy and asceticism, or however much one regarded it as sinful to entertain sexual thoughts in one's brain, it had to find vent in other ways than the natural ones. And the sphere of terrestrial mankind became very much a zone for the development of psychopaths, sadists, sex murderers, pyromaniacs and other kinds of aberrations of sexual evolution. Sexual life today is an even greater mystery than ever before. It is infiltrated by fantastic notions of sin, ungodliness, dishonour and shame, quite apart from the fact that the sympathetic faculties have been turned into prostitution. Life's most beautiful and most noble organ activity – the act of caressing – has become an article of commerce. The Sodom that one wanted to combat with violence, power and the death penalty culminates or flourishes in the world today more than ever before.
