1741. It is a common fact that the sexual desire is so great that it bursts all prejudices contained within the limitations for the sexual life of "man" and "woman" set by the church or the authorised guardians of morality, but the fact that millions of people feel sexual desire more or less as a hunger to caress not merely beings of the opposite sex but also beings of their own sex has as yet not become a common fact. When this expanded longing to caress has not yet become a sufficiently clear fact for people in general, it is naturally because of the hidden form of existence and the secrecy, the fear of shame and disgrace that such an inner longing to caress one's own sex is compelled to exist under, because of the sexual ineptitude and persecution of the flock. While the longing to caress in the form of the male and female desire can certainly occur openly and is something that one, outside church circles, does not need to be ashamed of, it is quite another matter when it finds expression in the form of a specific attraction towards one's own sex. There crucifixion, disgrace, scorn and derision lie in wait, despite the fact that this organic sympathy or attraction in its most sublime appearance or in a state of pure cultivation is a love that proves to be far more in harmony with "loving one's neighbour as oneself" than ordinary male and female love is. This latter love is, as we see, certainly not love but a culmination of the desire to own. Neighbourly love cannot possibly exist as a specifically male or female desire. The satisfaction of these two desires can never in any case whatsoever be neighbourly love, but is on the contrary a one hundred per cent satisfaction of the desire to own, the longing to possess a being of the opposite sex. It thereby becomes an eternal source of competition for the opposite sex, which must of necessity give rise to envy and the resultant rivalry and persecution of the beings of one's own sex. An exaggerated sympathy towards the opposite sex and an exaggerated antipathy towards one's own sex cannot possibly be or become anything other than the source of all mental darkness in the world. This sexual orientation or way of sensing the sexual desire is just as certainly an organic product as sight, hearing and all other sensations are. In the same way, the sexual feeling in the form of a longing to caress beings of one's own sex is just as irrefutably an organic product that one must get used to understanding is evolving in the world, indeed, in every single human being. Any persecution of this pure, organic evolution of neighbourly love is a persecution of the ultimate foundation of Christianity. It is a sabotage of Providence's creation of the "human being in God's image".
