1748. Are then these beings who have a humane attitude abnormal? Are they beings who have gone astray? Should they not be "real men" and "real women" rather than being "humane"? Indeed, is it not here that a great problem arises? Who can answer this question justly? We cannot get around the fact that terrestrial mankind represents a psyche that borders on two great extremes: inhumaneness and humaneness. And the developed and honest researcher likewise knows for a fact that inhumaneness constitutes the lowest step, and humaneness constitutes the highest step on the section of the ladder of evolution that constitutes terrestrial mankind. All release of energy or evolution thus ultimately leads to humaneness, which in turn means to the satisfaction of the terrestrial human hunger for peace, the desire for the abolition of war, the desire for ordered social conditions, so that the creation of culture, and thereby the growth of art, intellectuality or spirit, can take place unhindered. Thus evolution absolutely does not lead in the direction of turning the terrestrial human being into a "real man" or a "real woman". This life form, which is actually a Viking ideal, will thus gradually become a stage in terrestrial human evolution that people leave behind. Since the psyche of terrestrial human beings has already passed the stage of the original, specifically "male" and "female state" in their pure form, this establishes as a fact that it is not this sexual state that creates peace, and it cannot therefore be the future goal of evolution either. "Masculine" and "feminine" nature has never been in such a pure form as it is in the "animals". Within this zone, which borders fully on the terrestrial human psyche, it is this nature's specific abilities to manifest – the ability to hate, to avenge, to persecute and murder, the ability to undermine and destroy culture, the ability to wage war, the ability to oppress other beings and live well at the expense of other beings – that have found the greatest and most ingenious opportunity for expression. None of the ordinary terrestrial human being's other abilities have been able to reach the level of expression of precisely these, the abilities of the killing principle. These abilities are simply just at their peak in terrestrial human beings who are still very "masculine" or very "feminine" in appearance, that is to say, the very distinctly "one-poled" beings, "real men" and "real women". They are thus incontestably the heroes of the killing principle. They have no scruples about murdering, torturing and enslaving others. They are very happy to live well on the spoils of conquest, stolen goods and loot that are camouflaged as "war reparations" or the like. They take great pleasure in seeing their "enemy" held down in poverty and misery, if they do not simply wish to murder him. We present these analyses here not of course in order to criticise these beings. We wish merely to get to the bottom of the mystery of the highest fire and the various stages in the evolution of the beings' talents for sympathy brought about by this fire, and the correspondingly various forms of mentality or psyche that are connected with this. We must therefore take a level-headed and impartial look at the effects of terrestrial human sexuality on thinking and the exercise of will. Our present analyses have thus expressed the fact that the "male" or "female state", or the beings' "one-poled" sexual state, besides promoting the reproduction of the species or fertilisation and the moments of passion connected with this, has been completely incapable of giving rise to anything other than darkness or an ingenious promotion of hatred or the manifestation of the killing principle. Here, in over-hasty zeal in defence of the "one-poled" or so-called "normal sexuality", one will claim that terrestrial human beings who indeed appear as "men" and "women" have created great cultural assets in many different directions – in art, music, literature, science, morality and so on. And this is certainly true, but the specific originators and leading lights in the creation of these cultural assets have absolutely not been the "real men" and "real women" described above. It has not been the particularly pronounced "male" and "female beings" that have created works of genius in the sphere of art or high intellectuality. From the true domain of the "one-poled" being within terrestrial mankind, we have seen only the great commanders, conquerors, warriors and ruthless dictators, oppressors of peoples and so-called "gangsters". It is true that the great experts on culture or intellectual geniuses have appeared as "men" and "women", but this does not prove that these beings have been particularly "masculine" or "feminine". Their particular elevated cultural manifestation shows that they deviate from the robust "masculine" and "feminine" or "one-poled" being that cannot actually do anything unless it is in favour of selfishness or egoism. It is not the great self-worshippers and inhumane oppressors that are mankind's greatest creators of culture. Beings that are ingenious slave hunters and that use terror bordering on sadism cannot possibly be the creators of peace or culture. Wherever these beings gain power or have a say in things, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Here blood flows in an atmosphere of loss of liberty, of tears and of being trampled underfoot. This is how the terrestrial human being appears in its most conspicuous or culminating "one-poled" state. This is what the "man" and "woman" look like when they appear as a one hundred per cent "male being" and "female being". Is it not about time that the intellectual terrestrial human being of today directs his gaze towards the sexual structure or the branch of the highest fire that lies hidden behind the terrestrial "man" and "woman"?
