Livets Bog, vol. 5
It is the value of the material things in the amorous or mating state that to a great extent forms the basis of the so-called "evil" in the world
1759. If the universe is thus one single great revelation of a hundred per cent justice and love, it is not so remarkable that the state of life of male and female beings cannot be the highest existing form of life experience for the living being. As we have long since understood, the sexually one-poled state of these beings constitutes precisely the organic structure that makes possessing a kind of right to own a being of the opposite sex a vital necessity for their particular form of life experience. The actual culminating experience of this form of life is the intimate contact between two such opposite one-poled beings during the act of copulation. This act of copulation is thus the normal, highest sense of well-being or feeling of pleasure in life for the beings concerned. It is the very foundation of life in relation to which everything else concerning the functions of these two beings and their life together is of merely secondary importance. And this state of life of theirs could thus not exist at all or reproduce itself if the beings' structure were not sexually one-poled. The condition for this is thus two forms of one-poled state: the female state and the male state. They thus determine that the experience of life can exist only as a result of the contact between two opposite sexual partners and their interaction. For this reason the female being is a vital necessity for the male being, just as the male being is naturally in the same way a vital necessity for the female being. The highest fire or the sexual structure thus makes it a vital necessity that these two sexes mutually have to desire one another. This desire is the root of all existing forms of selfish desire or acquisitiveness and the feeling of "right of ownership" this gives rise to. The desire to own a being of the opposite sex thus also develops the desire for everything that can be useful and contribute to easing the way to attaining this. The suitor desires – in the worst case to an extent bordering on contempt for death – everything that can show him in a flattering light and make him desirable in the eyes of the sexual partner, such as power, wealth, property and gold. It is this value of material things in the amorous or mating state that, so to speak, forms the basis of all the so-called "evil" in the world. It has been the cause of the most bloody wars, acts of terrorism or atrocities, quite apart from the cases where it, in the worst cases, has developed quite abnormally into an unnatural desire that more or less turns its originator into a "miser" or into a more or less mentally ill being in this area. It is such more or less exaggerated materialistic desires and a corresponding fear of the same desires in other beings that are the cause of the world drama that, in this century in which the present work is written, sweeps over the Earth and keeps everyone at war with everyone else. If there were not this mutual, exaggerated desire in the beings, the conditions of life on Earth would be absolutely luxurious. The planet would be experienced as one of the most wonderful things that can be imagined. If all the people of the Earth were united as one people and jointly owned the Earth's assets, the present modern judicial system in all its forms would be completely superfluous. This judicial system is of course merely a principle by means of which one tries to hold at bay an overly aggressive, Viking-like morality of plundering and exaggerated satisfaction of both material and sexual desires that still exist as drives and natures in the great majority of the people on Earth.
