1785. But where is this mental summer heat to come from? Indeed, where do physical winter and summer come from? They come from the all-determining principle of the cycle. Is it not then reasonable that the same principle in the psychic or mental sphere must also come from the cycle? Is it not precisely the same laws and principles that exist everywhere, in psychic or mental substances as well as in physical ones? But how then is the cycle directed, and where does this principle have its seat or domicile? Indeed, have we not here too, through the cosmic analyses in "Livets Bog", gained sufficient insight into the mystery of life that we know that this all-directing principle can have its seat only in the "something" in the existing universe or cosmos that is called "X2" or the "superconsciousness" in the living being? Has the above-mentioned work not precisely demonstrated the fact for the advanced researcher or student of life whose studies are based on the above-mentioned work that the cycle is a principle of transformation of which life consists, which causes the manifestation of the alternating experiences of the light and dark contrasts? Is it not this principle of cycles residing in the superconsciousness of every living being and the organ structure that results from it that give rise to childhood, youth, maturity and old age as well as winter, spring, summer, autumn and midnight, morning, noon and evening? Is it not the same principle that directs the transformation of matter everywhere, that causes water to change successively from being a puddle of sewage into being crystal-clear air, blue sky with white clouds, the glow of dawn and sunset, and then back to being a puddle of sewage, only to ascend in turn to a radiant and sunlit existence, and so on continuously? Since all substances are thus subject to the eternal principle of cycles, which determines their appearance as alternately muddy puddles and clear sky, as useful objects and waste, as pure fruits and manure and so on, it is a matter of course that the mental energies are subject to the same principle and must display the same phenomena in a mental form. Why should we not see the same phenomena in the mental sphere? The principle of contrast cannot, however, be dispensed with anywhere. Without it, no form of experience would be possible. When we see people who are robbers, swindlers, murderers, sadists or are perverse in some other way or appear as drunkards, smokers, morphine addicts or are addicted to other forms of undermining vices and are helpless weaklings, living corpses, are mentally ill or mentally retarded, and when we see the opposite of this, such as great humane people or champions of justice, great artists, noble people who are honest and faithful and have the very highest ideals and virtues, great geniuses who are very knowledgeable and capable and so on, is it not then the same principle, the same sight that we have already seen in the appearance of matter in the successive transformation of the puddle of sewage? Just as the substances cannot be identical, but display different stages in the cycle between light and darkness, between heat and cold, so must the mental substances then also display the stages in the same cycle that they represent. There must therefore be kinds of thoughts and notions, actions or manifestations of will that must represent the puddle of sewage, the mud, the dirt, the waste, the manure and so on. There must be kinds of thoughts or mental phenomena that represent the cold of winter or the killing frost, just as there must be mental phenomena that represent the opposite, phenomena that must be heat, that must be inspiring or invigorating. There must be mental phenomena, thoughts and actions that are radiant manifestations of summer and, among other things, constitute mature, edible fruits and thereby will be the very greatest contrast to the manure that promotes them, and to which state they must of necessity return. It is therefore surely logical that the terrestrial human being's sexuality, the animal act of copulation, also cannot be something that exists outside the all-embracing principle of cycles.
