What it is that brings about the existence of beings and regions of light and darkness
1793. The experience of life is thus an interplay between these two contrasts or opposites. But in order for life not to perish or be extinguished, these two contrasts in the experience can never be entirely in their pure form, for then the other contrast could not be experienced. Complete darkness can be sensed only through it being marked out by the light, just as the light can be sensed only through it being marked out by the darkness. In every experience of life both contrasts must thus be present. There must be some darkness, and there must be some light, but there does not need to be equal amounts of darkness and light in every experience. In some experiences there is more light than darkness, while in other experiences there is more darkness than light. The experiences thereby take on different characters, becoming experiences of light or experiences of darkness depending on which of the two contrasts particularly dominates the experiences in question. Existence is thereby given colour, and can be divided into specific zones of life or planes of existence. We call individuals in whom light dominates their experience of life beings of light, and we call their planes of existence regions of light. We call the living beings in whose experience of life darkness dominates or has the upper hand beings of darkness, and we call their planes of existence regions of darkness.
