Livets Bog, vol. 5
Why the sexual principle is a mystery to terrestrial mankind
1795. What is it, then, that promotes this eternal function of life, this eternal principle of the cycle, this basis of the experience of life? Well, it can be only one thing, namely a supreme, eternally existing organ function that is the source of all other organ functions in the living being's appearance and domain. It is this organ function that has therefore been termed here in "Livets Bog" the "highest fire". It is a little flame from this fire that the terrestrial human being knows as its urge for sexual union and the feeling or sensation of being in love. We already know how this flame, through the one-poled sexual state, in which the beings appear as male beings and female beings, shapes life in the animal kingdom and thereby in the general zone of the terrestrial human being. Less well known, however, are the results of the flames of this fire in other zones and spheres. The terrestrial human beings are therefore completely ignorant of the main principle of their own lives and of the exalted way the manifestation of their lives unfolds. The sexual principle is therefore a mystery to the uninitiated terrestrial human being. It does not understand that its entire life from cradle to grave, from life to life, from cycle to cycle, is a principle of repetition in the same way as all other phenomena in existence are, such as day and night, summer and winter, sowing and reaping, coldness and heat, petrification and disintegration, condensation and vaporisation, muddy puddles and cleanliness and so on. No matter has a permanent state; everything is in a process of change; everything is in motion; everything is a repetition of advancing and returning, ascending and descending, evil and good, life and death. This being thus does not know that this entire process is made up of flames from the same fire and constitutes the eternal foundation of its life, its own supreme will, its own greatest wish or desire for intellectuality and love. We must therefore now conclude this section of "Livets Bog" with a concentrated description of how this fire transforms the living being's experience of life through the spiral cycle.
