But even during the year cycle's severest of winters, life is maintained to such an extent that it can survive the cold season and, when the spring sun begins once more to warm and shine upon the terrain, a richer and greater state of experiencing life can again unfold. So it is too with the spiral cycle of the living beings themselves, which also has its seasons (see symbol no. 10 in Livets Bog 3). That the living beings' experience of life is in itself rhythmical and expressive of a cycle, in the same way as all other kinds of energy in existence, is established as a fact by the circumstance that we can follow the living beings' rhythm of life or cycle. The terrestrial human beings can even now begin to differentiate between so-called "evil" and so-called "good", not only in their own psyche or mentality but also in the evolution of this mentality. That evolution exists at all establishes as an unshakable fact that there is movement. Movement can in turn never exist in any kind of free state without constituting a cycle. It is in accordance with this that the prophets or the greatest sages could say: "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." It is for this reason that water manifests itself alternately as muddy puddles and clear drinking water, as a murky atmosphere and a clear sky, as colourless air and the colours of sunrise and sunset. Is it not also the reason that the terrestrial human being, as well as other living beings on Earth, must represent the stages of childhood, youth, maturity and old age? And if we look at the living beings' course of evolution, it is easy to see that it represents a zone of mental coldness and a zone of mental warmth. Indeed, does not this course of evolution constitute precisely two great objects for the terrestrial human being's sensory perception? Does not this terrestrial human being feel an incipient antipathy towards all mental coldness and an incipient sympathy for mental warmth? Is not real, lasting peace on Earth the universal, unwavering object of terrestrial mankind's present desires and longings? Do not all political and religious parties work towards what they themselves think can promote this peace or create a higher physical and spiritual level, a future golden age or a paradise on Earth? That they in their striving sometimes have diametrically opposite views and fight one another does not alter the fact that it is a higher form of life experience, an improved terrestrial existence where war is an impossibility, that they want to create. Indeed, the cycle of the mentality cannot be explained away.
