1801. As it is this fire, in the form of sexuality, that blazes within every living being as the supreme source of its sensory experiences and its manifestation, it is evident that this source or phenomenon cannot be one-directional but must have just as great a number of specific variations or forms of inner structure as there are forms of experiences of life or living beings, since these various forms of living beings are a result of precisely this structure. It is thus a fact for all evolved or intellectual human beings that living beings differ greatly from one another in appearance, and that these differences are due to their particular sympathetic faculties, that is, their sexuality. Here one will perhaps object that, as regards sexuality, the living beings exhibit great one-directionality. In this area the beings seem to be rather identical. They all, with a few exceptions, appear as either male beings or female beings. And this is of course true, but is it not also at the same time a fact that all these sexually one-directional beings – animals and terrestrial human beings – represent the winter zone of the spiral cycle? This, the zone of the killing principle, is maintained by the fact that the sympathetic faculties are at their minimum. Here there is no love for beings other than one's spouse and one's offspring. The other beings are but rivals for all available goods or advantages. They are beings that are regarded rather as being in the way of one's own happiness. Envy, hatred and persecution are the forms of manifestation that the sympathetic faculties vent towards beings – except their mate and their offspring, which they protect – this envy, hatred and persecution thereby being the direct and most profound cause of war and unrest, of injustice and misuse of all other living beings. This is not the kind of sympathetic faculty that makes the being feel that it "did not come to be served, but to serve". On the contrary, it inspires the living being with quite the opposite attitude. It is this attitude that makes the being feel that "every man is for himself". It is this attitude that gives the animal's organism horns, tusks and claws and the terrestrial human being the ability to crush its neighbour with the might of the elements in the form of atom bombs and other means of the mass destruction of culture and society, and that causes everyone to create death rattle, screams, torment and hell for everyone else. This is thus the result that the one-directional sexuality has led the living beings towards. It is this one-directional sexuality that is the highest fire's least emanation of warmth. The terrestrial human beings and the animals thus live in the least display of the highest fire. But since the law of the cycle gives rise to opposites, so that winter is followed by summer, and night is followed by day, it is here established as fact that the living beings' sexual state cannot be one-directional throughout the entire spiral cycle.
