1827. Is it not the terrestrial human being's ingenious, intellectual and artistic insight and creative ability that raises it above the level of the animal? Does one believe that it is the intention or goal of life for the terrestrial human being that it should be merely an unintellectual, dumb, gestating or procreating being, whose sole and greatest pastime is to compete with the animals in mating and bringing offspring into the world? And incidentally, is there any modern civilised human being of today that is at such an unintellectual level that it lives its life only as a kind of higher breeding animal? Which of these beings is completely devoid of spheres of interest that lie outside the state of mating? Is it not generally true that they each to varying degrees have a little longing to become a genius in one intellectual or artistic field or another, a field that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with their nature with regard to marriage? Is this not precisely why they are called civilised human beings? Indeed, is not their religious sphere of interest also to be described as something that has no bearing on their marriage or their ability to reproduce or mate? Do the animals not live happily in their sphere of mating, despite having no such religious sphere of interest? Indeed, if one is to combat intellectuality's incipient development of the ingenious insight and creative ability, one must begin by combating it in all lower-ranking human beings, if not in the apes. It is, as will be remembered, with this incipient ability that God transforms the animal into the "human being in God's image". "God's image" cannot be a mere, reproductive being whose only interest and ability is to produce offspring. "God's image" must then be a liberated being that, by virtue of its intellectuality, can follow God's thoughts and experience the world picture and its own identity as the creator of time and space; it thereby constitutes the master of life and, with its genius, can create in harmony with what God reveals through Nature's processes of creation. That this divine transformation of the terrestrial human being cannot grow and develop in the terrestrial human mentality without ousting something of the animal, sexual sphere of interest is obvious. That the sexuality of the civilised human being is thus subject to a process of transformation as its intellectuality and creative ability approach a level of genius is likewise now an obvious fact. That this development will gradually shatter the old, orthodox moral precepts and ideals is just as inevitable and natural as day and night, quite regardless of how much resistance one puts up, how many curses one hurls, how much "holy wrath" and "righteous indignation", gossip and slander one might use in one's kicking against the goads*. The cosmic cycle of life runs its course. The animal psyche must perish in the terrestrial human mentality. The great intellectual line of evolution is already marked out in the terrestrial human being. There is no way back. The high-intellectuality and art that are the outer foundations and effects of neighbourly love cannot be stopped. The beings are on their way to the heights. God models everyone in His image. The beings ought to direct their gaze in profound awe towards the heavens and cry out: "Thy will be done".
