The cause of marital degeneration is not a moral shortcoming, but an organic process of transformation in the terrestrial human being's sympathetic faculties
1829. Those people in whom these sympathetic faculties have thus changed and given rise to marital degeneration cannot be said to be particularly unscrupulous, spiteful or evil people as regards their general relationships to their fellow beings and those around them outside the marital sphere. Here they represent an evolutionary standard or intellectuality that is far beyond the intellectual standard and humane attitude of the "real men" and the corresponding "real women" mentioned in section 1746 towards those who are around them and who are outside marriage or the mating sphere. As previously shown, their weak or unstable marital behaviour is due not to a general moral shortcoming in their character, but is a consequence of the transformation of their sympathetic faculties and the resulting transformation of their sexual psyche. This in turn thus means that the organic structure that inevitably creates the perfect male being and the corresponding female being no long exists in their psyche in its original full form. It is at most only partially present here. But an organic structure that is not perfect must of course determine that the abilities based on this cannot be perfect either. If one has weak legs, one will walk badly. If one has lost one's eyes, one cannot see. And just as an unsteady gait and blindness in the people concerned cannot be denounced as immoral, so a being's lack of marital perfection because of the transformation of its sympathetic faculties cannot be denounced as immoral either. The being becomes immoral only when it will not acknowledge its own marital degeneration and ineptitude and continues making others unhappy by binding them to it in short-lived marriages or sexual cohabitations that from the outset are doomed to be only the preliminary stages to divorce. It is here that most terrestrial human spouses of today have moral shortcomings, thereby causing a great many divorce proceedings and creating homelessness or unhappy homes for the children of divorced parents.
