1833. After this group we come to the third sphere of terrestrial human sexuality. Here we find all the beings that are very degenerated as regards marriage or the mating state. With regard to marriage or mating they are restless. They drift from one marriage to another. They still live in the sphere of divorce with the hardships it engenders. When these beings can make the same marriage last their entire lives, it is not because of a natural drive or because they live in a particularly long-lasting honeymoon state in the marriage they have entered into, but because a true and more highly evolved humane feeling or real love prevents them from having the heart to institute divorce proceedings or dissolve the marriage, partly out of regard for the children and partly out of regard for the spouse for whom a divorce may mean sorrow and unhappiness. Often a desired divorce is avoided because it would lead to unfortunate financial circumstances for the parties involved. But a marriage that is based only on pity is not a marriage, no more than a marriage that is based only on financial phenomena is a marriage. The former is a crucifixion of the loving party, while the latter is prostitution. But a marriage should be neither crucifixion nor prostitution. It should be based solely on the pure love of mating that manifests as "amorous love". This blissful intoxication, maintained by glandular functions, is the only rightful foundation for a marriage. It is thus the absolutely only thing that can make sexual cohabitation a real marriage. In any situation where marriage is not built on this foundation, it is, despite a marriage certificate and other forms of blessing by the state and church, merely a pseudo-marriage, a camouflage, and is maintained only by virtue of the fact that this camouflage is a lesser evil than divorce would be. One therefore understands that the "zone of unhappy marriages" is not a false expression, for it describes the one hundred per cent truth about terrestrial human marital degeneration. It is within this group of beings, which we will call "human beings C", that we find widespread marital degeneration and amorality of a certain kind within the marital sphere, at the same time as these beings, as we have already mentioned, are sometimes extraordinarily self-sacrificing and creative in a positive way outside this sphere, in their relationship to society. Many of these beings are geniuses in art, literature, music, science and technology. In their creative fields, they can show very great humaneness or a high level of morality and self-sacrifice that is beneficial to society. Thus we see that these beings are those in whom the terrestrial human being's great process of transformation is most conspicuous. Because of their genius, their consciousness has reached the point where it contains a gigantic cultural, socially beneficial field by virtue of which they promote the development of society towards a higher culture, superior art, more ingenious creations and thereby towards a more beautiful physical world than the present one. Their weak field is thus their marital state. Here they cannot compare with "human beings A", for whom the field of marriage constitutes the fundamental area of their consciousness. But the latter human beings are, on the other hand, with their egoistic and hostile nature towards their own sex, almost devoid of neighbourly love. The weak side of these beings is therefore their relationship to the state, the nation or society's judicial system, which has come into existence in order to protect and safeguard these beings from their own egoistic or animal nature, and to protect the other human beings, the highly civilised and humane ones, from the former primitive beings' as-yet wild and uncultivated, and thereby inhumane or animal, nature.
