1848. In the Bible we have an extraordinarily great representative for each of these two great cultural epochs. For the first epoch, the epoch of marriage, we have Moses, and for the other, the epoch of universal love, we have the world redeemer Jesus Christ himself. The former is such a thoroughgoing prophet of marriage and the laws relating to it that he actually calls for capital punishment for any sympathy of a higher nature that is manifested between beings of the same sex, while Christ invokes the very greatest sympathy between beings, quite regardless of their sex, as the only fundamental ideal of the future for people of his time and the time ahead, thereby heralding the way to perfection or the way to the kingdom of heaven and the Father. In these two great, divine messengers to mankind we see two very great shining stars on the terrestrial human path of evolution. The light from each of them is so different in colour and brightness that it is easy to see that they together indicate a mental shift or transformation in the evolution of the terrestrial human psyche. At the time of Moses the law of marriage was a very relevant and vitally important issue. At that time there was no need for Christ or an interpreter of a sympathy that lay outside marriage or people's reproduction and continued existence of their race. Later there thus appeared in people tendencies that weakened the very foundations of marriage, tendencies that caused it to begin degenerating. Neither the law of Moses, capital punishment nor theological and ecclesiastical curses have been able to reverse this degeneration.
