1859. The sexual seduction of a minor can thus lead to suffering of undreamt-of dimensions. The suffering is brought about mainly by the fact that the child's opposite pole, through which its sympathetic or loving attitude to its own sex develops, is activated and developed very prematurely, that is to say long before the child is actually mature or developed enough to be able to bear such a faculty for sympathy or state of love with moral or cultural decorum and dignity, and thereby without plaguing its surroundings or causing them unpleasantness. After the seduction and the subsequent progressive change of its sexual orientation, its natural pole – which for the male being is the masculine pole and for the female is the feminine pole – will thus be outdistanced by the currently progressing unnatural growth of the opposite pole. The being becomes wakingly day-conscious of the organic functions and effects of its opposite pole at a time when it is still a main condition for it to be conscious only of the domain of its natural pole. With this awakening of a foreign tendency of consciousness confusion begins to arise. The being has periods in which its conscious connection with its natural pole is very obscured and inactive, while its mental or conscious connection with its new or opposite pole is very exaggerated. And the nature and character of this pole is then a correspondingly dominant factor in the being's psyche. Since the man's masculine nature and the woman's feminine nature during such periods are thus almost put out of action, the man must of course become feminine and the woman masculine, and thus we witness how the "masculine woman" and the "feminine man" come into being.
