1871. As we have seen here, the culmination of darkness in the spiral cycle lies in the area of the transformation of the poles, that is, in the area of the male sex and the female sex. Here we meet mental or spiritual sufferings of every kind. First we meet the zone of unhappy marriages. Then we meet the other spheres or types that differ even more from the flock. We have labelled these various spheres and types A, B, C, D, E, F and G. And what we have seen in these spheres and types is not very encouraging. It is hardly surprising that many people ask with fear and abhorrence in their voice if everyone really has to go through the states of these spheres before attaining initiation. As a rule their question is put very concretely: "Do all human beings have to become homosexual?" When one is familiar with the above analyses it is not so difficult to understand what instils the inquirer with their contempt for homosexuality. For the majority or the beings of the flock it is as if the term "homosexuality" has become the epitome of all sorts of sexual abnormalities. The mere fact of seeing a "feminine man" and a "masculine woman", of seeing beings prostituting themselves with their own sex, of seeing the beings becoming lethargic or chronically unemployed because of sexual confusion, inner psychopathic tendencies or morbid thoughts is of course more than sufficient to confuse the as-yet cosmically ignorant, but so-called "normal" human being. But the point is that the general public or the flock do not actually see, and thereby do not become familiar with, the really pure and completely normal beings that are undergoing sexual transformation, since they are, as a rule, so thoroughly cultivated and well-informed of the flock's complete ignorance of the sexual area, and of their great tendency to misunderstand the problem that they neither naively nor stupidly expose their psyche to the beings of the flock. They are far too familiar with what the world redeemer said about not casting pearls before swine. They know that the swine will chew the precious pearls to pieces without gaining any nourishment or benefit from them. The beings under sexual transformation that the flock or the general public become acquainted with are, as a rule, only the more or less derailed ones. They are all the beings that in every way have lost their moral inhibitions in the sexual area and therefore find themselves at the mercy of their derailed, excessively strong drives or urges. There can of course be a few exceptions to this, where normal beings under sexual transformation are found out by people who have no business knowing, but it is as a rule in situations where they have been betrayed by unworthy or primitive companions or friends who have discovered the above-mentioned beings' intimate situation. The insight that the flock or general public get into the sphere of sexual transformation and its beings is thus only insight into the derailed area and the beings that occur there. This area cannot of course be expressed or perceived as the normal way; it is merely a way that is formed by the beings whose sexual drive has grown to be stronger than their morality and ethical capacity. Just as there is a normal sphere and an abnormal one within the area of the majority or flock, there is of course also a normal sphere and an abnormal one within the area of sexual transformation. It would be just as foolish to judge the flock or the general public by its abnormal beings and apply the analysis of its mentally ill beings to the flock as of course it would be to apply the analysis of the abnormal beings in the zone of sexual transformation to the normal beings of this zone. It would then to a culminating extent be unscientific, not to say unjust, to make the analysis of sick or abnormal beings the same as that of healthy and normal beings. Nonetheless, it is this great mistake that the general public or the flock are in principle guilty of when they regard the derailed beings of the zone of sexual transformation as the normal beings of this sphere. But this is excusable in that it is based on an absolute ignorance and naivety that has dominated the general public's sexual sphere or sphere of the highest fire for thousands of years, indeed, throughout the entire Biblical epoch. Even Moses himself swung the lash of death over anyone who manifested sexually tinged feelings that lay outside the authorised view of the male sex and the female sex in their pure state.
