1893. The "second coming of Christ" thus actually means simply "cosmic consciousness". With cosmic consciousness the human being has reached the stage in evolution where it has acquired the same mental freedom, the same ability to see with cosmic clear-sightedness and with the same love or desire to love unselfishly, to create peace and joy for its fellow beings and surroundings as that manifested by Christ. The "second coming of Christ" is thus the same as being enriched by the same consciousness as that which transformed "Jesus of Nazareth" into "Christ". And it is in this way that all human beings will be transformed by the great birth. From being a "Jesus of Nazareth who was born in a manger", which here means a person born among the general population without any visible outer radiance, every terrestrial human being will be transformed into a Christ by the great birth. This state is described in the Bible as the "second coming of Christ" because the terrestrial human being, before reaching the stage in evolution at which it encounters the great birth, has already inevitably in previous lives met and been in contact with a Christ consciousness, namely the concerned being's world redeemer. All beings at the stages of evolution where they lived on belief have, as will be remembered, been led by beings that in evolution were far ahead of the group of human beings whose spiritual life they were to form and create. The last and most developed of these beings had had cosmic consciousness to a greater or lesser degree, which is of course to a corresponding extent the same as Christ consciousness. After this meeting with a Christ being's consciousness and way of being in the outer world, the individual or the terrestrial human being will once again in a later life meet a Christ consciousness and Christ-like way of being. But this time this meeting will take place, not in the outer world but, on the contrary, in the being's own inner world, which in turn means in its own consciousness, mentality or psyche. The Christ being it meets is namely exclusively its own state and way of being that has been transformed by the great birth from that of the terrestrial human being to that of the Christ being. The being's acquisition of Christ mentality or cosmic consciousness is the only absolute, true "second coming of Christ".
