1905. For the beings of the animal kingdom, that is to say, for the one-poled beings, the feminine principle and masculine principle each exist as the absolute ruling factor in their own specific organism. This is what determines the two sexual forms of beings: "male" and "female". We know that the opposite pole is present in each of these beings, but only in a more or less latent form. And the sensory perception of the beings through this opposite pole is therefore correspondingly latent and outside the sphere of the day-consciousness. It is thus at the very most merely a very small and unconscious function of the subconsciousness compared with the pole in which the being is wakingly day-conscious and which becomes the dominant one and determines whether the individual appears as a male being or a female being depending on whether this pole is by nature masculine or feminine.
