1916. The beings are as yet entirely unaware of the fact that kissing is an effect of the beginnings of the two-poled state. It is fostered and developed here at its initial stage as an animating prelude to the performance of the one-poled sexual act. Here the tendency to kiss has arisen imperceptibly as an intensified desire to caress. But this expanded desire or urge has nothing to do with the one-poled sexual force, since this, with the being's transformation from animal to human being, is degenerating and is weakened more and more. It cannot therefore be displayed in any intensified way. When the being nonetheless becomes increasingly sexual, it is thus due to the incipient development of the opposite pole's energy. And this pole's first tendencies in the direction of release are reflected in a concentrated way in an expanded desire to caress and in a growing enjoyment of kissing. That this act or intimation of love is in itself or in its own purest form not a one-poled emanation of energy is also noticeable in the fact that kissing occurs in all situations that have nothing to do with one-poled sexuality and that lie outside everything that has to do with the ordinary act of copulation. Kissing occurs thus when children and parents, and friends and good acquaintances caress one another. It occurs as a greeting caress and parting caress, as a good-night caress and a good-morning caress. Kissing is thus already a very universal act of caressing. We see here how this act of caressing, just like all other ways of expressing sympathy, is the highest fire, and is thus fundamentally a sexual act, which even here at its first feeble beginning is manifestly not orientated specifically towards a male or female but has a tendency to be universal. Here this thus differs from the one-poled act, which is directed towards one specific gender. This can be manifested only in a contact between two beings of opposite sexes, while the completely developed two-poled act is manifested as a climactic caress based on a sexual contact – not with a specifically male being or a specifically female being, not with an absolute man or an absolute woman – but with the completely evolved two-poled being, the god-like human being in God's image.
